Columbia University has recently expanded its campus to a site between Broadway and the viaduct running alongside the Hudson River. This satellite campus was designed by Renzo Piano. His master plan set the guidelines for what is to be a manifestation of great architectural design and urban planning. Through this groundwork of design principles, we have developed a proposal for a tower that will elevate itself above the ground, taking registration cues from the surrounding context such as the intricate viaducts to the West, and Renzo Piano constructs to the South-East.

This tower is a centralized architectural element that acts as an urban node. The centripetal dynamics of the towers form allows the occupant to easily understand its program and function. The ground floor of the tower is elevated 60’ to allow a farmers market and other community events to occur underneath throughout the week. This market will allow local vendors from the surrounding neighborhoods to sell their products to students and other community members.
